The quick answer to this question is: it depends.
If you are completing a simple tax return with just your W2, 1098-T (Tuition statement), and 1095-A (Health Insurance Marketplace Statement – you cannot e-file for free if you have more than one statement) then you can file your taxes online with H&R Block for absolutely FREE. Additionally, for a limited time, filers with mortgages and itemized deductions can file for free with Block. If you have a 1040EZ, 1040A or 1040 with Schedule A – you’ll pay nothing when you file online.
Please note that H&R Block will harassed constantly to upgrade or pay for extra services as your are completing your FREE tax return. Aforementioned, if you have a simple tax return, you won’t have to spend a dime.
However, if you fall into any of the categories below, it is highly recommenced that you upgrade your edition:
- You own real estate
- You are an investor
- You are a small business owner
- You have retirement income
Furthermore, if you want to maximize your refund and ensure you claim every deduction entitled to you, you have to upgrade to either the Deluxe or Premium edition because not every deduction is covered under the Free edition.
